Alvia A. Rahman moved to the United States in 1985 from Pakistan and worked for The Palm Beach Post for 14 years. In the late 80’s she started painting to fulfill a life long desire and to relieve loneliness & boredom. Soon, painting gave her so much pleasure and satisfaction that it became an obsession.

Before coming to the United States, Alvia used to write short stories and poems, but since the stories were in her native language of Urdu, there was little scope for her work here. Painting, however, was something she could share with her American friends and fellow artists. Alvia studied with several teachers and started painting more challenging subjects. Two of her paintings have received recognition in juried contests and a few have been accepted by galleries for exhibition.

Alvia paints mainly in watercolor but sometimes paints in oil & acrylic too. Recently she painted a life-sized horse for an exhibition entitled “Wild Things,” which benefited the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach County. The painted horse, which was displayed for several months at City Place in West Palm Beach, was auctioned and is now on display at the old Wellington Mall. In addition, a few of Alvia’s paintings are also on display in Wellington. In addition, Alvia makes and sells greeting cards that are hand-painted with her original watercolor designs or reprints of those designs.
